Job description
The director corporate counsel contributes to Starbucks success by providing legal advice and counsel to Starbucks management and partners. Models and acts in accordance with Starbucks guiding principles.

Your Key Responsibilities

As director corporate counsel you will be responsible for providing legal advice in the areas of corporate governance, commercial transactions (including licensing, franchising, foodservice, marketing, procurement/supply, logistics, manufacturing, distribution, IT), marketing, digital (including data privacy), real estate (including leasing), labour & employment and tax.

Responsibilities and essential job functions include but are not limited to the following:

Leadership - Setting goals for the work group, developing organizational capability, and modeling how we work together:
Identifying and communicating key responsibilities and practicing to ensure the immediate team of direct reports promotes a successful attitude, confidence in leadership, and teamwork to achieve business results;
Supporting the implementation of Company programs, procedures, methods and practices to promote Starbucks key messages and achieve a competitive advantage.

Planning and Execution - Developing strategic and operational plans for the work group, managing execution, and measuring results:
Continuously improving practice group operations within the legal department to meet company objectives for operational excellence;
Identifying, planning and executing areas for improvement to ensure consistent legendary service to customers;
Contributing to departments strategic and business planning, including operating plan and budget;
Coordinating work with outside counsel and internal clients and manages associated costs;
Leading and participating on department committees and project teams to deliver initiatives to support Starbucks business objectives;
Planning and managing business unit and department processes and practicing to ensure that programs are aligned with company business goals and objectives;
Preparing, communicating and educating client groups and team on changes in policies and practices within the organization.

Business Requirements - Providing functional expertise and executing functional responsibilities:
Effectively managing outside counsels’ work product and costs;
Ensuring that Starbucks complies with regulatory requirements and filings and with commercial and contractual obligations;
Managing the implementation of ongoing company compliance programs;
Participating on cross-functional teams with business unit/ department clients to enhance the experience for Starbucks partners and customers and increase profitability, including identifying, planning, and executing opportunities for business growth and expansion;
Providing clients with advice, counsel and training regarding legal requirements, best practices, and strategies for managing risk in order to mitigate legal exposure while helping to advance the Company's business objectives.

Partner Development & Team Building - Providing partners with coaching, feedback, and developmental opportunities and building effective teams:
Challenging and inspiring partners to achieve business results;
Conducting and ensuring the completion of performance reviews;
Ensuring partners adhere to legal and operational compliance requirements;
Overseeing training and development of partners directly and indirectly managed and making effective staffing decisions;
Providing coaching, direction and leadership support to team members in order to achieve partner, business and customer results.
Desired Skills and Experience
The ideal director corporate counsel we’re looking for has a minimum of 10 years of relevant substantive legal experience in a law firm and company legal department in an international retail environment.

Must haves:
Master degree in Law;
License to practice law in member state of European Union;
Experience managing legal professionals;
Ability to apply knowledge of multidisciplinary business principles and practices to achieve successful outcomes in cross-functional projects and activities;
Ability to apply sound business principles and practices to project management and change management processes;
Ability to achieve goals through direct and indirect influence and collaboration;
Fluent in English; fluency in other European languages preferrred;
Ability to establish and communicate a compelling and inspired vision, create competitive winning strategies and plans, and ensure department strategies are aligned with company strategies;
Willing to take a managed risk to drive the business forward;
Ability to develop a positive, respectful, productive and professional work environment;
Ability to establish positive connections with others so as to facilitate the attainment of business results;
Ability to continuously develop the competencies of both self and others;
Ability to understand and effectively leverage the organization to accomplish business and unit goals;
